ASREP and FAO Strengthen Digital Land Governance in Isiolo

ASREP Africa joined a **FAO-supported cross-learning exchange** to strengthen digital land governance in Isiolo County — equipping local institutions with the geospatial tools needed to manage fragile rangelands more effectively.

A response to widespread land degradation

With **78% of Isiolo County's rangelands reported as degraded**, sound, data-driven land governance has never been more urgent. Degraded rangelands undermine pastoralist livelihoods, deepen competition over scarce resources, and heighten climate vulnerability across the drylands.

Building practical geospatial capacity

The FAO-supported cross-learning brought together key stakeholders — including the **County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands** — for practical training in **QGIS, spatial data management, digital mapping, data visualization, and geospatial analysis**.

These skills allow county institutions and community partners to map land use, monitor degradation, and plan restoration with far greater precision — turning spatial data into better decisions on the ground.

Evidence into action

The exchange reflects ASREP's Think-and-Do Tank approach: pairing rigorous evidence and modern tools with the local knowledge of the communities who steward these landscapes, so that land governance in the ASALs is both technically sound and community-led.
